Call +49 for monument

2016

Desk 140 × 90 × 90 cm, chair, telephone, table photo ‚Museum Wola‘, telephone book, 16 Polaroid pictures each 10 × 6,2 cm, marker pen

Random telephone numbers in Germany were called and the telephone connection was present via microphone and speaker in the exhibition space. These moments were captured in Polaroid pictures marked with the time of the call and the words ‚Wola monument‘.
After this performance the desk with the materials remained as piece for the exhibition ‚Wola Warm+up’; a group show dealing with the absence of a monument in Wola that could serve as an ongoing and active reminder of the German occupation during the Nazi times. In contrast to the already existing monuments in the city that refer to the past mainly, I tried to create a present experience with an unknown outcome. Furthermore this performance was and still is a proposal for an art piece in public space – an automated active calling telephone booth – that calls random telephone numbers in Germany 24/7, 365.
