În 2019, în drum spre unul din joburile sale Johannes Hugo Stoll se intersecta frecvent cu statuia lui Wilhelm I. Situată în centrul orașului german Karlsruhe, statuia îl descrie pe kaizer călare, îmbrăcat în uniformă de general. Monumentul, realizat în 1897 de sculptorul Adolf Heer este turnat în bronz și așezat pe un soclu în trei părți din granit roșu suedez fixat pe un piedestal în trepte. Figura istorică, pasivă la realitățile cotidiene existente, domină piața Kaiserplatz radiind mesajul istoric și politic al împăratului Prusac. Figura lui Wilhelm I este reprezentată pubic, în peste 1000 de statui răspândite în locații de pe mapamond.
Influențat de contextul pandemic, artistul german Hugo Stoll se decide să-i aplice statuii lui Wilhelm I una dintre cele mai populare practicticii medicale ale timpului prezent. Stoll include figura întemeietorului Germaniei în realității curente ale pandemiei. Dotat cu un băț telescopic, o camera video și un prelevator de date biologice, Hugo Stoll pătrunde în nasul împăratului și culege date biologice pe care le supune unor teste moleculare în departamentul de genetică al Institutului pentru Bioștiințe Aplicate din Karlsruhe.
Gestul artistic al lui Stoll are rolul de a aduce în discuție modul în care diferite tipuri de realității se întrepătrund, resping sau gravitează în jurul nostru. „Is History ok?” este un proiect de cercetare artistică care mixează referințe și practici din tehnologia genetică de tip CRISPR, istorie, cultura politică și artă cu scopul de a revela fragilitatea și ușurința de manipulare a realității.
In 2019, on his way to one of his jobs, Johannes Hugo Stoll frequently intersected with the statue of Wilhelm I. Located in the center of the German city of Karlsruhe, the statue depicts the kaizer on horseback, dressed in general‘s uniform. The monument, made in 1897 by the sculptor Adolf Heer, is cast in bronze and placed on a three-part plinth of Swedish red granite fixed on a stepped pedestal. The historical figure, passive to the existing daily realities, dominates the Kaiserplatz square radiating the historical and political message of the Prussian emperor. The figure of Wilhelm I is represented in public, in over 1000 statues scattered in locations around the world.
Influenced by the pandemic context, the German artist Hugo Stoll decided to apply to the statue of Wilhelm I one of the most popular medical practices of the present time. Stoll includes the figure of the German founder in the current reality of the pandemic. Equipped with a telescopic stick, a video camera and a biological data sampler, Hugo Stoll enters the emperor‘s nose and collects biological data, which he subjects to molecular tests in the genetics department of the Institute of Applied Biosciences in Karlsruhe.
Stoll‘s artistic gesture has the role of bringing into question the way in which different types of reality intertwine, reject or gravitate around us. „Is History ok?“ is an artistic research project that mixes references and practices from CRISPR-type genetic technology, history, political culture and art in order to reveal the fragility and ease of manipulation of reality.
